No One Is An Island
While indies like to wear their autonomous spirit on their sleeves, success almost always depends on a number of others who are helping along the way. Like it or not, you won’t get far in this business without maintaining good relationships with others.
If you got into independent development because you like to sit in a dark office by yourself all day, disconnected from people, you’re in for a surprise. You need the help of others to get your products and services out to the world. Whether it be designers, marketers, or other experts you hire to fill in the gaps of your skill set, your fellow colleagues in the community with whom you will trade war stories, or your clients and customers, who will expect prompt replies and fast action when something goes wrong—other people are going to be critical to growing a successful business.
And while many of us may be introverted by nature, we can’t run from the responsibilities we have to the greater community, either. We don’t need to pretend we’re someone we’re not, but we do have to stretch outside our comfort zones a bit to commit to our success and that of the greater good. In this talk, we’ll explore some strategies for working within our introverted tendencies to build successful relationships and contribute to the community as a whole.
